After the DB5, DB6, and Tesi 3D launched with Ducati’s two-valve V2 engines – offering 1000 or 1100 cc and a moderate output of less than 100 hp – the DB7 marked the first true superbike since Bimota’s restart in 2003.

The DB7 was powered by the Ducati 1098 engine. The Testastretta Evoluzione, a 90° V-twin with four valves per cylinder and a displacement of 1099 cc, produced 160 hp thanks to a new airbox, a titanium exhaust system from ZARD, and optimized ignition and fuel injection mapping.

The V2 engine was mounted in a hybrid frame combining oval steel tubing with CNC-machined aluminum components. The self-supporting carbon fiber tail section, which was fully enclosed at the bottom, was also bolted to this frame structure. Additional high-quality carbon fiber components were used for the full fairing, fenders, license plate holder, and engine spoiler.

The headlight design was reminiscent of the Ducati 999

The DB7 featured lightweight forged aluminum wheels, measuring 3.50″ with 120/70 ZR 17 tires at the front and 6.00″ with 190/55 ZR 17 tires at the rear. The braking system consisted of dual 320 mm discs with four-piston fixed calipers at the front and a single 230 mm disc with a two-piston fixed caliper at the rear. The front suspension was a 43 mm upside-down fork from Marzocchi, offering 120 mm of travel, adjustable preload, and both compression and rebound damping. The rear swingarm was connected via a central monoshock from Extreme Tech with similar adjustment options and suspension travel.

The German motorcycle magazine mo praised the suspension’s functionality and versatility, writing in issue 12/2008:

„Whether on the racetrack or winding country roads, the DB7 feels right at home. Stability issues? Not with this Bimota. The chassis offers everything from firm, race-oriented precision to everyday comfort. It carves through corners fluidly, accurately, and neutrally.“

In another test, published in the German motorcycle magazine Motorrad issue 13/2008, the DB7 impressed with both its riding characteristics and build quality:

„Whether in the fast double-right at the end of the straight, a right-left-right-left combination where the bike flips from maximum lean angle to the opposite side, or in a tight, winding section that feels like a 30 km/h zone, the DB7 enabled thrilling maneuvers. …The premium feel of the meticulously machined aluminum parts, the lovingly executed paintwork, and the attention to detail in the electrical and cooling system installations prove that its designers took the functional aspects of motorcycle engineering just as seriously as the aesthetic ones. The perfect blend of both is most evident in the self-supporting, enclosed carbon fiber tail section – solidly built, crafted to the highest standards, and finished with an elaborate paint job.…“

In 2008, Bimota released the special DB7 Black Edition. Aside from the black color scheme replacing the standard red and white, it was identical to the base model.
